Review, interview and giveaway: This Golden Flame (Emily Victoria) | an action-packed scifi with an asexual main character!

For today’s blog tour post I had the amazing opportunity to read This Golden Flame and interview the author, Emily Victoria! It sounded like such an exciting (and needed) debut! Today I’ll tell you all about it!

What is This Golden Flame about?

Orphaned and forced to serve her country’s ruling group of scribes, Karis wants nothing more than to find her brother, long ago shipped away. But family bonds don’t matter to the Scriptorium, whose sole focus is unlocking the magic of an ancient automaton army.

In her search for her brother, Karis does the seemingly impossible—she awakens a hidden automaton. Intelligent, with a conscience of his own, Alix has no idea why he was made. Or why his father—their nation’s greatest traitor—once tried to destroy the automatons.

Suddenly, the Scriptorium isn’t just trying to control Karis; it’s hunting her. Together with Alix, Karis must find her brother…and the secret that’s held her country in its power for centuries.

What did I think of This Golden Flame?

“People aren’t meant to have commands written into their skin.”

Emily Victoria, This Golden Flame (quoted from an advanced copy)

Aaah this book was such a pleasure to read! I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it and loved to see an aroace (aromantic and asexual) main character in a YA scifi! It was much needed in the industry so I think we can all thank Emily Victoria for giving it to us.

While I really, really enjoyed this book, I also really, really don’t have any strong feelings towards it. It was good, don’t get me wrong, and I’d still recommend it, but at some moments I just craved more. This golden flame is an action packed book and the characters are amazing, but I did want to see some more depth in this standalone.

It has a lot of other things going for it, though! It’s quick and addicting, has great representation and is definitely well-written too, which is why I think Emily Victoria’s next book(s) are something to look forward to! She has a promising voice, I’d just love to see her use it to create more depth!

I really loved the friendships between these characters and following their journey! Though this book didn’t blow me away, I’d still recommend it, definitely! Emily Victoria’s debut gets a very positive 3/5 from me! I hope to see her grow even more in the future!

Thank you to Inkyard Press and TBR and beyond tours for providing me with an e-arc of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Who is the author behind This Golden Flame?

Emily Victoria is a Canadian prairie girl who writes young adult science fiction and fantasy. When not word-smithing, she likes walking her over-excitable dog, drinking far too much tea, and crocheting things she no longer has the space to store.

Interview time!

Hi Emily! First of all, thank you so much for doing this interview with me! Could you introduce yourself and your book a bit?

Thank you so much for having me! So yes, my name is Emily and I’m a YA science fiction and fantasy author. I live up in Canada (where it is very cold right now) with my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. I love crocheting, and felting, and I spend far too much time reading.

This Golden Flame is set in an ancient Greece-inspired world and it has a stubborn ace girl and an automaton as the main characters. They have to flee from the powerful Scriptorium and uncover the dark secrets of their world.

This golden flame is your debut novel (congrats, by the way!). What’s something about the publishing process that surprised you?

Thank you! Publishing this novel has truly been such an amazing adventure. One thing that’s recently surprised me is just how busy it got right around my debut. I wasn’t expecting half of the things I ended up having the opportunity to do, so that was all just so lovely.

Asexuality is very underrepresented in the YA industry. What’s something you’d like to say to your asexual readers?

I hope that they’re able to see themselves in this book, like I was. And I hope that our community keeps having the opportunity to read stories (and publish stories) about who we are, because that is so important.

What were your favourite types of scenes to write?

I really liked the quieter, character-driven scenes. While it was also fun to write the action-filled scenes, I just feel that so many of my favorite moments in the novel came about because of the characters, the interactions they had, and the ways that they found one another. The scenes between Karis and Alix were particularly meaningful for me to write.

Which character from This golden flame did you connect with the most? Why?

I like to say that I gave my identity to Karis but my personality to Alix, so I’d definitely say those two. I gave them each pieces of myself and they are both the most me characters that I have ever written.

There’s lots of important lessons in this book, but what do you hope readers will learn most of all after reading your novel?

I hope that readers learn just how strong we are together, and that by working together we can truly create the change that we want to see in the world.

You’ve already achieved a lot of things, of course, but what’s an author-dream of yours that you’re secretly hoping will be fulfilled?

As you mentioned, I’m so grateful at how many of my writing dreams have already come true, but I will say that I would love to have a long-term career as an author. I hope that This Golden Flame becomes the start of that.

I also saw that your other book, Silver in the mist, has been sold! Congrats! Can you tell us anything about it?

Thank you! So Silver in the Mist is another standalone. The main character is a spy and the magic of her world is dying as this strange force called the Mists creeps over the land. She is sent to capture a magical caster, but the caster isn’t what she expects.

If you could tell your younger writer self anything, what would it be?

Go after your dreams, because they’re worth chasing. Always.

And lastly, what’s a book you’d recommend to the people reading this?

Elatsoe is a recent one I absolutely loved, so everyone should definitely check it out!

Thank you so much for this lovely interview, Emily! I had the most fun reading your answers, you seem like an incredible person and I can’t wait for more novels by you!
